The blue light that makes your screen more easily visible during the day may contribute to poor sleep when used late into the evening. It can also make it harder to view your screen and read in low or artificial light situations. The Night Light feature reduces blue light and increases the warmer, redder colours to combat this.
- To turn Night Light on manually, click or tap the status area in the bottom right corner or press ‘Alt’ + ‘Shift’ + ‘s’ on a keyboard.
- Click or tap the Night Light button.
How to automate and customise Nightlight
You can set Night Light to automatically turn on and off and customise how much blue light to allow when Night Light is on.
- Click or tap the status area in the bottom right corner or press ‘Alt’ + ‘Shift’ + ‘s’.
- Click or tap the ‘Settings’ icon.
- In the settings window, scroll down to the ‘Devices’ section and click or tap on ‘Displays’.
- Scroll down to the bottom to see ‘Night Light’ settings:
The colour temperature is how cold (blue) or warm (red) your screen appears.
- You can only change the colour temperature of Night Light when it is active so first click or tap the toggle switch labelled ‘Make it easier to look at your screen or read in dim light’ to turn Night Light on.
- You can now adjust the ‘Colour temperature’ slider to make your screen more comfortable to view in low or artificial light situations.
By default, the Night Light feature is turned off and you need to turn it on manually, as and when required, via the system menu (see How to turn Night Light on manually).
However, you can schedule Night Light to automatically turn on every evening and turn off again in the morning. To do so:
- Click or tap the drop-down menu for ‘Schedule’.
- Choose either the predefined ‘Sunset to Sunrise’; or ‘Custom’.
- If you choose ‘Custom’ you can set your own schedule by adjusting the blue dots on the timeline that appears.
- Even when a schedule has been set you can still turn Night Light on temporarily at other times via the system menu.
Note: If this does not work it could be because your computer settings are managed by someone else (an IT department or administrator for example) in which case you will need to contact them to access these settings or for further help.
